In Like a Lion . . .

Isn't that what they say about March? In like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb? Or the other way around? Something like that.

Anyway, our March came in and out like a flash of light. I'm behind in blogging and after this weekend's wedding will catch you up on mom and dad's recent trip, Sophia's first swimsuit, our recent house accomplishments and more!

Rainbow Breakfast

Sophia is a lucky girl. One of Pablo and my favorite things to do is to go to yummy restaurants! We like to eat at new ones, old favorites, holes-in-the-wall, fusion restaurants, ones with chefs we can't pronounce . . . and of course, don't forget the taco stand.

At 10 months, Sophia has eaten in many of Vallarta's best, and those of you who scoff should know that Puerto Vallarta is home to some of the most renowned international chefs. Ok, we don't have Bobby Flay or Gordon Ramsey, but we've got some good ones! Who make good stuff!

And yet, Sophia's favorite flavor is still . . . yes, plastic.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Kristi Klemens and Paul Bennett are an amazing camera-wielding couple from California who have gone from being our co-workers at weddings to becoming our international friends whom we cannot WAIT to see at every Next Visit. Paul shot a couple photos while breakfasting together at Daiquiri Dicks yesterday morning!

Next month they'll be in town shooting and are actually GIVING us a free family session! I am so excited!

Over the Hills and Through the Woods . . .

. . .to grandma's house we go!

This past weekend brought a whirlwind trip to Irapuato to visit Pablo's family. We started out Friday night at 9:30 pm at the PV bus station where we boarded our luxe bus and away we went!

Our first day brought a trip to the Tianguis - a gigantic market that opens up every Saturday and sells anything and everything you can imagine - from batteries to bras, fresh fruit to adorable little girl shoes!

(We got held up at this stand for a while! Soph took quite a while to make her selection, but we eventually made it past this stop with one super-cute pair of shoes for her!)

After a while, Sophia got bored with shopping and got a ride on grandpa's shoulders. This proved to be a bad idea as Soph quickly pointed out that a haircut was well overdo!

One nap, lunch and a few hours later, a long walk on the pretty tree-lined streets was in order. Somehow with this family, our walks always end at a taco cart, sidewalk restaurant or, in this case, an ice cream parlor where Sophia hopped on a horse and tried her first (very small) bite of strawberry ice cream!

Sunday brought church, more food (of course) and some quality couching time for Sophia with her tias.

Sophia spent Monday morning bouncing. Literally. Her Grandma Vargas had the patience to let her bounce to her heart's delight on the blue yoga ball. This lasted for about an hour and a half. Not kidding.

Monday was highlighted by an afternoon at my favorite little restaurant - Las Cigarras! The streetside eatery is located on the quietest street in the city with great views flanking the quaint avenue - a view of a colonial church on one end and a fresh flower shop on the other! We spent a few hours sipping, chowing and well, doing our very best to entertain an antsy Sophia (who after only a couple weeks of crawling believes it is time to transition to walking)!

Monday night brought another bus; Grandpa Vargas had the magic touch this time and put Sophia to sleep prior to boarding.

Nine and a half hours later, we were home sweet home!

We had a great time catching up with the Vargas Clan and are so excited because in just a few short weeks, we are getting a visit from the Crawford Clan! Soph's super lucky to see both sets of her grandparents within a month's time! For most of you, this may be a weekly occurrence, but as I've said before, because miles separate us, our family time is about quality not quantity, and we love every minute of it!

Soph-in-a-Box

Sophia: When I am fussy, and I mean FUSSY . . . when I don't want to sleep or eat or play or poop or snuggle or be alone or have a dry diaper or even a wet diaper, when I don't want a bath or my veggies or fruit or even my Cheerios. When the world seems as though it couldn't get any worse.

Just put me in a box. It's the Little Things that make me happy.

Amor a la Cholesterol

This Valentine's breakfast wasn't the healthiest, but it was made with love - just like mom used to do!

The Love of Friends & Family

One of the great things about 2009 is that it brings so many firsts for Sophia! Her first crawl, her first clap, her first sleep-through-the-night (ok, we’re still praying for that one!), and of course this week, her first Valentine’s Day!

In Mexico, the 14th is called “El Dia de Amor y Amistad” – the day of love and friendship. Not only is romantic love celebrated, but love between friends and true friendships are equally important and honored on this day.

Appropriately, we decided to do something special for Sophia’s first friends – the four other youngsters at her early stimulation classes – Gimena, Valentina, Isabela and Pedrito. These five little ones started out together a couple months ago – serious, straightfaced and not all that mobile! Two months later, they are full of laughs and giggles, crawl over each other, sit on top of each other and show no signs of the timid tykes they used to be.

So thank goodness for Michelle who came up with the idea of doing personalized iron-ons for Soph’s friends! We bought bibs, ironed-on hearts and little messages from Sophia, stuck in a red cuddly sponge, a biter’s bisquit and some plastic chain links (which can keep Sophia busy for 15 minutes – a loooooooong time for a nine-month old!) and we were set to go!

Her classmates loved the fun little gifts and gave her lots of early Valentine hugs and kisses!

So along with celebrating Sophia's new friends, I celebrate my old friends! You know who you are! I miss them every day and am so thankful that despite distance we are able to stay in touch and share each others lives! I only hope that Sophia one day finds great girlfriends who will stand by her, support her and love her through thick and thin!

And last but certainly NOT least . . . Happy Birthday to my mom today! She's such a special lady, mom and grandma! Love you mom!
